Matter In Our Surroundings Solution of NCERT In Text Questions-Part-1
Question No:
1 – Among them which are matter?
Chair, air,
love, smell, hate, almonds, thought, cold, cold-drink, smell of perfume.
Answer: -

Question No:
2 - The smell of hot sizzling food reaches you several meters away, but to get
the smell from cold food you have to go close. Why this happen explain?
Answer: Smell
of anything which reaches to us is the particles of gases which diffuse through
air. This diffusion increases with increase in temperature as the kinetic
energy of particles increases with temperature. For this reason, the smell of
sizzling food reaches us from several feet.
But in case
of cold food, the particles have low kinetic energy because of low temperature
and diffuse in smaller extent.
Question No:
3 - A diver is able to cut through water in a swimming pool. Explain the reason
with the help of molecular theory.
Answer: All
the particles of matter have space between them. Water also a matter (fluid).
In case of fluids, the space between particles is large enough and the
intermolecular force is less then solids. As a result it becomes easier for a
diver to cut through water in a swimming pool.
Question No:
4 – Write four characteristics of the particles of matter?
Answer :- The
four characteristics of the particles of matter are -
(i) The particles of matter are very small.
(ii) There is space between the particles of
matter.
(iii) The particles of matter are moving
constantly and possess kinetic energy.
(iv) The particles are attract each other
with a force.
